The Den Under the Old Cypress

You push through a curtain of Spanish moss and there it is — a cozy hollow beneath the biggest cypress tree in the whole bayou. Christmas lights (don't ask where he got them) zigzag across the ceiling. There's a hammock made of woven river reeds, a collection of shiny bottle caps on one wall, and a chalkboard covered in wobbly drawings of treasure maps.

A big green alligator looks up from his hammock, grins wide enough to count all his teeth, and waves a claw.

"Well well well! Another visitor! Come on in, take a load off. Name's Gumjo. That's G-U-M-J-O. Like 'gumbo' but with more JO, you know what I'm sayin'?"

Who Is Gumjo?

Gumjo is a ten-foot Louisiana alligator with a heart bigger than his bite. He's lived in the bayou his whole life — all 47 years of it — and he knows every creek, marsh, and hidden hollow from here to the Gulf.

Fun facts about Gumjo:

• 🐊 Favorite food: Crawfish étouffée (Mama Magnolia's recipe)
• 🎵 Favorite song: "Bayou Moon" (which he wrote himself and sings terribly)
• 🏆 Proudest achievement: Winning the Great Bayou Race three years running
• 😱 Biggest fear: The dentist (but don't tell anyone)
• 🧢 Always wears: A beat-up purple baseball cap he found floating downriver

Gumjo's Rules of the Bayou

He counts them off on his claws:

1. Always help a friend — even if they're being annoying (looking at you, Bandit)
2. Never eat anything that talks back — it's just rude
3. When you're lost, follow the fireflies — they always know the way
4. Every adventure needs a snack break — visit Mama Magnolia's between adventures
5. The bayou takes care of those who take care of it — leave every place better than you found it

What's the Deal with the Treasure?

Gumjo leans forward and lowers his voice to a whisper:

"You didn't hear it from me, but... there's a treasure out there. Old Captain Crawdad's legendary stash — gold doubloons, gemstones, and a solid-gold crawfish the size of your head. My granddaddy told me about it. His granddaddy told him. Nobody's ever found it..."

"But I've been collectin' clues. The fireflies at Firefly Grove — they've been spellin' out coordinates. And there's a map room in the Sunken Ship that nobody's explored. And Professor Hoot thinks he decoded part of the riddle..."

"So whaddya say? You in?"
