Chapter 1: Into the Mist
The fog rolls in thick as gumbo. Gumjo leads the way, his tail barely visible a few feet ahead. Every footstep — well, claw-step — makes a squelch that echoes weirdly in the silence.
"Stay close," Gumjo whispers. "The Misty Marsh plays tricks on you. Once, Bandit walked in circles for three hours and ended up back at his own den thinking he'd discovered a new cave."
The air smells like wet earth and old secrets. Somewhere ahead, a faint green glow pulses through the fog.
The Fork in the Path
You come to a place where the trail splits three ways. Each path looks... different.
The Left Path is lined with glowing mushrooms — tiny pinpricks of blue-green light that create a beautiful tunnel effect. You can hear faint music. Jazz? From mushrooms?
The Middle Path goes straight into the thickest fog. You can't see more than two feet ahead. But Gumjo sniffs the air and says: "That's where the sound is coming from."
The Right Path slopes upward to a ridge. From up there, you might be able to see above the fog and get the lay of the land. Professor Hoot would approve of the strategic approach.
The Mushroom Path (Left)
You follow the glowing mushrooms. The music gets louder — it IS jazz. Trumpets, trombones, a stand-up bass. As you round a bend, you see it:
A whole colony of musical frogs having a midnight jazz concert on a log stage! Ribbit Rose is there, front and center, belting out a number that makes the fireflies dance.
🎵 "The fog rolls in, the night is young, and every swamp critter's got a song to be sung!" 🎵
Ribbit Rose spots you and waves you over. "Gumjo! You brought a friend! Perfect — we need a bigger audience. Pull up a lily pad!"
The frogs play three more songs. During the intermission, Ribbit Rose leans in close:
"Hey, I heard something interesting. Old Shell was mumbling in his sleep again — something about 'the key is in the ship, the map is in the light.' Might be treasure talk. You should check Firefly Grove and The Sunken Ship."
That's a clue! Old Shell's sleep-talking is legendary for being accidentally prophetic.
The Fog Path (Middle)
You push into the thickest fog. It's disorienting — left and right lose meaning. Gumjo's eyes glow faintly in the dark, two amber lanterns floating through the mist.
Then you hear it. A deep, rhythmic thumping. Like a heartbeat, but bigger. Way bigger.
You emerge into a clearing and find... a giant bullfrog. Not just any bullfrog — this is THUNDER, the biggest amphibian in the bayou. He's the size of a small car. And he's drumming on a hollow log with his massive feet.
"GREETINGS, TINY ONES," Thunder booms. His voice shakes the water. "I AM CREATING MUSIC FOR THE MARSH. THE MARSH HAS BEEN SAD LATELY."
Gumjo whispers to you: "Don't let the size fool you. Thunder's gentle as a kitten. Just... loud."
Thunder offers you a deal: he'll tell you a secret about the treasure if you can keep rhythm with him for ten beats. You grab a stick and tap along...
BOOM-tap-BOOM-tap-BOOM-BOOM-tap-BOOM-tap-BOOM!
"WELL DONE! THE SECRET IS THIS: CAPTAIN CRAWDAD'S TREASURE IS SPREAD ACROSS THREE LOCATIONS. YOU NEED ALL THREE PIECES TO FIND THE GOLD. ONE PIECE IS AT CRAWDAD CREEK. ONE IS IN THE SUNKEN SHIP. AND THE LAST? ASK THE FIREFLIES."
Three pieces! This treasure hunt just got bigger.
The Ridge Path (Right)
You climb the muddy ridge, pulling yourself up on roots and vines. At the top, you break through the fog layer and gasp.
The view is breathtaking. The bayou stretches out below like a silver-green quilt. You can see:
- 🌫️ The Misty Marsh you just came from — swirling fog with faint green glows
- ✨ Firefly Grove to the east — a cluster of cypress trees pulsing with golden light
- 🦞 Crawdad Creek to the north — you can see the old stone bridge
- 🚢 The Sunken Ship to the south — a mast poking above the dark water
- 🌺 Mama Magnolia's houseboat — warm pink and orange lights reflecting on the water
Gumjo joins you on the ridge and lets out a low whistle.
"Been livin' here my whole life and this never gets old. See that? Everything's connected. The creeks feed the marsh, the marsh feeds the bayou, the bayou feeds the Gulf. Just like our adventure — everything connects to everything."
From up here, you also spot something strange: a pattern of lights moving between Firefly Grove and the Sunken Ship. Like a signal. Like someone — or something — is communicating.
What's Next?
🦞 Head to Crawdad Creek
