The Half-Drowned Steamboat
You see it before you smell it: a rusted, moss-covered hulk tilting out of the black water like a metal whale stuck mid-dive. Paint peels in ribbons from its hull — the name barely readable: THE CRAWDAD QUEEN.
The air here is different. Heavy. Quiet. Even the frogs have stopped singing.
Gumjo doesn't like this place. His tail is straight as a board — the gator equivalent of goosebumps. "Last time I came here," he whispers, "I heard something moving below deck."
Getting Inside
The main deck is above water but rotting. You'll need to go below the waterline to find Captain Crawdad's quarters. Three ways in:
🚪 The Main Hatch (Obvious but Stuck)
The main hatch is locked with a rusted padlock. If you've picked up the brass compass from Crawdad Creek, flip it over — there's a hidden key socket on the back. The compass IS the padlock key. Click. The hatch groans open.
No compass? The hatch won't budge. Try Crawdad Creek first.
🪟 The Broken Porthole (Tight Squeeze)
A shattered porthole on the starboard side leads straight into the cargo hold. Gumjo's too big, but if you've got Zip with you (visit The Crew to learn about her), the little chameleon can zip through, scout ahead, and unlatch the cargo door from inside.
🌊 The Underwater Gap (Brave Choice)
The hull has a breach below the waterline. Gumjo can hold his breath for 45 minutes (he's a gator, remember), and he offers to swim you through on his back. It's dark, tight, and you'll bump into things. But you'll end up right outside the captain's quarters.
Below Deck
However you get in, below deck is eerie. Water sloshes ankle-deep. Barnacles cover every surface. Bioluminescent algae paint the walls in faint green-blue light — just enough to see by.
You pass through:
The Galley — Clawdia would lose her mind. Rusty pots, a cast-iron stove bolted to the floor, and a menu board still readable: "Tonight's Special: Crawdad Gumbo (Captain's Recipe — DO NOT SHARE)". There's a recipe card tucked behind the board. Gumjo pockets it for Mama Magnolia.
The Map Room — Charts and navigation tools everywhere, frozen in mildew. One map is pinned to the wall with a rusty knife — it shows the entire bayou, with three locations circled in red ink:
- Crawdad Creek (you've been here)
- A tree with an X (Old Shell knows which one!)
- This ship — specifically the captain's quarters
An arrow connects all three to a fourth point, label smudged by water damage. But you can make out one word: ISLAND.
The Crew Bunks — Hammocks rotting in rows. Under one, scratched into the wooden frame: "The captain trusts nobody. He split the key in two and hid the other half where he hides himself. — First Mate Barnaby"
The Captain's Quarters
The door has Captain Crawdad's symbol — three circles in a triangle, the same symbol the Firefly Grove fireflies displayed. Inside:
A desk. A chair. A locked chest bolted to the floor.
On the desk: a captain's log. The last entry reads:
"Day 847. They'll come for it eventually. I've split the prize and scattered the pieces where only cleverness can reunite them. The compass points the way. The key opens the door. And the map — well, the map is written in light itself. They'll need the old professor to read it. And the old turtle? He was there when I buried the deepest treasure. He won't tell unless he trusts you. Good luck, fortune seekers. — Capt. Crawdad"
The locked chest requires a key...
The Key 🗝️
Look around the captain's quarters carefully. Behind a loose wall panel (Gumjo spots it — gators have excellent night vision), there's a hidden compartment containing:
- 🗝️ A brass key on a silver chain, engraved with the same three-circle symbol
- A waterproof leather pouch containing a gold doubloon with Crawdad's face on it
- A note: "This key opens what lies beneath the tree. Bring the compass too, or you'll never find the lock. — CC"
Treasure Piece #2: THE KEY. You now have what you need to open the final treasure cache — once you find it.
Escape!
As you grab the key, the ship groans. The hull shifts. Water starts pouring in faster through the breach. Time to GO.
Gumjo grabs you and charges for the main hatch. "SWIM DAY! LET'S GO!"
You burst out onto the deck as the ship settles another foot into the mud. It's not sinking — not today — but it's a reminder: the bayou takes what it wants, eventually.
Standing safely on shore, you catch your breath. Gumjo holds up the key. "Two down. One to go."
