BAYOU BLASTER

The Great Race

Once a year, the entire bayou gathers for the most chaotic, unpredictable, and ridiculously fun race ever imagined.

THE GREAT BAYOU RACE 🏁

Once a year, when the magnolias bloom and the fireflies are brightest, the bayou creatures gather for The Great Race — a multi-stage, anything-goes, cross-bayou gauntlet from Gumjo's Den to the Big Stump Finish Line.

There are rules. Nobody follows them. That's part of the fun.

Bandit (self-appointed announcer, standing atop a lily pad with a megaphone made from a hollow log): "LADIES, GENTLEMEN, AND CREATURES OF INDETERMINATE SPECIES — WELCOME TO THE 47th ANNUAL GREAT BAYOU RACE! The rules are simple: GET THERE FIRST. The rules are also OPTIONAL!"

The Racers

Eight contestants line up at the starting vine:

| Lane | Racer | Odds | Strategy |

|------|-------|------|----------|

| 1 | 🐊 Gumjo | 3:1 | Power swimming + tail propulsion. Slow on land, devastating in water. |

| 2 | 🦝 Bandit | 8:1 | "Creative navigation." Knows every shortcut (and creates new ones mid-race). |

| 3 | 🦎 Zip | 2:1 (favorite) | Pure speed. Has won 6 of the last 10 races. Doesn't do strategy — just GO. |

| 4 | 🦉 Professor Hoot | 15:1 | Flies over obstacles. Gets distracted by interesting fungi. Finishes... eventually. |

| 5 | 🐢 Old Shell | 50:1 | Has entered every race since 1968. Has never finished. Falls asleep at Stage 3. |

| 6 | 🐸 Ribbit Rose | 5:1 | Incredible jumper. Sings while racing, which is either motivating or distracting. |

| 7 | 🦀 Clawdia | 12:1 | Sideways runner. Surprisingly quick. Gets angry at obstacles and pinches them. |

| 8 | 🌺 Mama Magnolia | 25:1 | "I'm not racing, I'm WALKING. And I'll get there when I get there." (Has won twice, both times by accident.) |

Stage 1: The Bayou Sprint 🌿

Start: Gumjo's Den → Misty Marsh

The starting vine SNAPS and they're off!

Zip takes the immediate lead, a green blur disappearing into the fog. Gumjo belly-slides into the water channel and blasts forward with his tail. Bandit immediately veers off-course into what he claims is a "shortcut."

Professor Hoot is airborne. "I have a CLEAR strategic advantage — OOH, is that a rare species of bracket fungus?" He lands on a tree to investigate. The race continues without him.

Drama at the Misty Marsh crossing: The fog is so thick nobody can see. Gumjo swims through confidently. Ribbit Rose leap-frogs over lily pads by sound alone. Clawdia walks straight into a tree, gets angry, and pinches it in half.

Old Shell is still at the starting line, looking for his walking stick.

Stage 1 Results:

  1. 🦎 Zip (blistering pace)
  2. 🐊 Gumjo (water advantage)
  3. 🐸 Ribbit Rose (lily pad express)

Stage 2: Crawdad Creek Rapids 🌊

Misty Marsh → Crawdad Creek

The creek section is a wild water rapid. Contestants can swim it, swing over it, or try to cross King Snapper's territory.

Zip tries to run across the water surface. She's fast enough for exactly 12 feet before gravity notices. SPLASH.

Gumjo owns this section. Water is his domain. He rockets through the rapids with his jaw set and tail churning like a propeller.

Bandit emerges from his "shortcut" — somehow ahead of Zip. Nobody knows how. Nobody asks. He's covered in mud and has a bird's nest in his tail.

King Snapper pokes his head out as the racers blast through. "NO RUNNING IN MY CREEK! This is a KINGDOM, not a racetrack!" Nobody slows down. King Snapper shakes his tiny claw at the sky.

Ribbit Rose hits a rock, flies 30 feet in the air, does a triple backflip, and lands perfectly on the far bank. The crowd goes wild. She bows.

Stage 2 Results:

  1. 🐊 Gumjo (water KING)
  2. 🦝 Bandit (shortcut wizardry)
  3. 🐸 Ribbit Rose (involuntary acrobatics)

Stage 3: The Firefly Forest Sprint 🌟

Crawdad Creek → Firefly Grove → Sunken Ship clearing

The nighttime section. Firefly Grove at dusk is a kaleidoscope of light — beautiful but VERY disorienting.

Gumjo charges through, but the shifting lights make him dizzy. He runs in a circle twice before Zip yells: "GUMJO! LEFT! YOUR OTHER LEFT!"

Bandit has put on a headlamp (where did he get a headlamp? It looks suspiciously like Mama Magnolia's reading lamp). He navigates with eerie precision.

Professor Hoot reappears! He's been flying in a straight line this whole time — above the trees, ignoring the course entirely. He swoops through Firefly Grove at full speed, scattering confused fireflies. "I'VE FOUND A SECOND WIND!"

The Firefly Queen is not amused.

Somewhere behind them, Old Shell reaches Stage 2. He sits down on a log. "Rest stop," he mutters, and closes his eyes.

Stage 3 Results:

  1. 🦝 Bandit (headlamp cheating? Or genius?)
  2. 🐊 Gumjo (dizzy but determined)
  3. 🦉 Professor Hoot (FROM NOWHERE!)

Stage 4: The Shipwreck Scramble 🚢

Sunken Ship clearing → through/over the Crawdad Queen wreck → open water

The rusted hull of Captain Crawdad's ship is the obstacle course. Climb over it, swim under it, or find a way through. The fastest path is through the Sunken Ship itself — if you dare.

Bandit runs straight through the main hatch (left open from your previous adventure). He emerges on the other side in 40 seconds, holding a souvenir he definitely stole.

Gumjo takes the underwater route — through the hull breach, under the keel, shooting out the other side like a torpedo.

Zip climbs straight OVER the ship. Straight up the hull, across the deck, down the anchor chain, and LAUNCH off the bow. It takes her 22 seconds. New record.

Clawdia, who has been quietly maintaining 4th place this entire time, reaches the ship and simply cuts a new hole through the hull with her claws. She creates her own shortcut. Bandit is both offended and impressed.

Stage 4 Results:

  1. 🦎 Zip (22-second ship crossing!)
  2. 🦝 Bandit (through like a bullet)
  3. 🐊 Gumjo (underwater torpedo)

Stage 5: The Final Stretch 🏆

Open water → Big Stump Finish Line

The last half-mile is open bayou water with a sprint to the Big Stump. It's anyone's race.

Bandit's commentary (running while commentating, breathing hard): "ZIP — has the lead — GUMJO closing — your correspondent — also in the race — very tired —"

Zip is 20 yards ahead. She can taste victory. Her tiny legs are a blur.

Gumjo is swimming the parallel water channel. He's gaining. Tail going like a motor.

Ribbit Rose is doing her signature move — the "Bayou Bounce" — launching off lily pads in massive leaps. She's catching up FAST.

The finish line is in sight. Big Stump, draped in Spanish moss, with Mama Magnolia waiting at the top holding the Golden Magnolia Trophy.

The Photo Finish:

Zip hits the shore and sprints for the stump. Gumjo explodes out of the water and slides on his belly. Ribbit Rose makes one ENORMOUS final leap —

They arrive within ONE SECOND of each other.

But wait.

Mama Magnolia is already AT the finish line. When did she — HOW did she —

"I walked the road," Mama says calmly, holding up the trophy. "You all took the complicated route through the swamp and over the ship. I took the footpath. Got here twenty minutes ago. Had time to make tea."

She's won. Again. By walking.

Official Results 🏆

|-------|-------|------|-------|

| 🥇 1st | 🌺 Mama Magnolia | ~35 min | Walked the road. Made tea. |

| 🥈 2nd | 🦎 Zip | 42:01 | Fastest actual racer |

| 🥉 3rd | 🐊 Gumjo | 42:02 | One second behind! |

| 4th | 🐸 Ribbit Rose | 42:03 | Triple-jump finish |

| 5th | 🦝 Bandit | 43:15 | "I was commentating!" |

| 6th | 🦀 Clawdia | 48:30 | Cut through a ship. Legend. |

| 7th | 🦉 Professor Hoot | 61:00 | "I stopped to document the fungi. Worth it." |

| DNF | 🐢 Old Shell | — | Fell asleep at Stage 2. Still there. |

Bandit immediately protests: "NON-RACERS can't WIN! She wasn't even RUNNING!" Mama Magnolia pats his head. "Baby, I crossed the finish line first. That's called winning." She hands him a biscuit. Protest withdrawn.
