The Split-Trunk Oak 🌳
The old mill pond sits in a quiet corner of the bayou, where the water is glass-still and cypress trees stand like cathedral pillars. And there, on a gentle rise beside the pond, is the split-trunk oak — a massive tree cleaved down its center by a long-ago lightning strike, its two halves growing outward like open arms.
Old Shell described it perfectly. Sixty years, and it hasn't changed at all.
Gumjo stares up at it. "This is the tree from the firefly message! Tree, arrow down, three circles. Under the tree. We're HERE."
Finding the Spot
The oak has three prominent roots, each as thick as Gumjo's tail, spreading out from the trunk into the soft earth:
- Root A — Heads east toward the mill pond
- Root B — Heads south toward the marsh
- Root C — Heads west toward deeper forest
You pull out the brass compass from Crawdad Creek. But this isn't a normal compass — it doesn't point north. The needle spins slowly... then locks on to Root C, pointing west. Captain Crawdad's symbol on the compass face glows faintly.
"Root C it is!" Gumjo starts digging. Gators are EXCELLENT diggers.
The Lockbox
Three feet down, his claws hit metal. CLANG.
A steel lockbox, wrapped in waterproof leather, sealed with a padlock bearing the three-circle symbol. Exactly as described in the captain's log from the Sunken Ship.
You pull out the brass key. It slides in perfectly.
Click.
The lid opens.
Captain Crawdad's Treasure 💰
Inside the lockbox, wrapped in oilcloth:
🪙 A pile of gold doubloons
Not just any gold — hand-minted coins with Captain Crawdad's face on one side and the three-circle symbol on the other. There are exactly 47 coins (one for each year the Captain sailed the bayou).
📜 A scroll
Unrolling it reveals a hand-drawn map of the entire bayou — every creek, every grove, every hidden passage — labeled in Captain Crawdad's handwriting. On the back, a message:
"To whoever found this: congratulations. You're cleverer than I expected. This gold isn't the real treasure — it never was. The real treasure is this: you explored. You solved puzzles. You made friends. You trusted a raccoon (risky but sometimes worth it). You woke up an old turtle. You decoded firefly messages. You dove into a sinking ship.
The bayou gave you all of this for free. The gold is just a souvenir.
But also, yes, it's real gold. Don't let Bandit near it.
— Captain Crawdad"
🎖️ A medal
Bronze, heavy, engraved: "HONORARY BAYOU EXPLORER — FIRST CLASS." It's on a ribbon that matches Gumjo's shade of green.
The Whole Gang Shows Up
Within minutes (bayou news travels FAST), everyone arrives:
Gumjo puts on the medal and immediately starts crying. "I'm not crying! Gators don't cry! It's... allergies. Swamp allergies."
Bandit tries to pocket three doubloons. Mama Magnolia slaps his paw without even looking. "I saw that."
Zip runs seventeen victory laps around the tree before anyone can congratulate her.
Professor Hoot produces a tiny pair of white gloves and begins cataloging the coins. "For SCIENCE and historical PRESERVATION."
Old Shell chuckles quietly. "Took you long enough. Captain Crawdad bet me a biscuit you'd find it in under a week. I said a month. Looks like I owe him."
"Owe him?" Gumjo asks. "But the captain's been gone for fifty years!"
Old Shell smiles his ancient, knowing smile. "Has he, now?" And refuses to say another word.
Ribbit Rose sings "We Are the Champions" (bayou version, extra croaking). It's genuinely beautiful.
Clawdia has somehow already set up a portable kitchen and is making celebratory gumbo.
Mama Magnolia wraps you in the biggest hug the bayou has ever seen. "I'm so PROUD of you, baby. Now eat your gumbo."
The Mystery Continues...
As the sun sets and everyone celebrates around the split-trunk oak, the fireflies begin their nightly display. But tonight, they spell something new:
"WELL DONE. BUT THE CAPTAIN LEFT MORE THAN ONE TREASURE. SEE YOU NEXT ADVENTURE."
Gumjo grins, gold medal glinting. "Did you hear that? MORE adventures! This bayou is FULL of secrets!"
Old Shell is already asleep. Bandit is already planning. Professor Hoot is already researching.
And the bayou, as always, is waiting.
