Who Is Professor Hoot?
An ancient barred owl who lives in the tallest tree at Firefly Grove. Reading glasses perpetually perched on his beak. A collection of scrolls that would embarrass most libraries. Opinions about EVERYTHING, and the academic credentials to back them up.
He's the one decoding Captain Crawdad's treasure riddle. He does this slowly, methodically, and correctly. Every time.

📜 History & Background
Professor Hoot has existed in the bayou longer than most of the trees. He's personally witnessed four centuries of Louisiana history, and has Opinions about all of it.
He mentored Gumjo's great-grandfather, served as a de facto judge in 12 bayou disputes, and wrote the definitive guide to Bayou Flora & Fauna (all 47 volumes, none published — "The world isn't ready").
His involvement in the treasure hunt is both his most exciting and most frustrating project. He decoded 73% of Captain Crawdad's riddle over three years. The last 27% took one afternoon once Zip brought him the right firefly data.
He won't mention this sequence of events if asked.

"Nessun Dorma" at the Sing-Off — Professor Hoot's annual sing-off entry: a full operatic aria in Italian. He has never won. He considers the audience "educationally underprepared."
The Puzzle Championship — Reigning 4-time champion of his own puzzles at the Gator Games. When challenged on the conflict of interest, he said: "The puzzles are independently difficult. My winning is simply evidence of that independence." Nobody was satisfied by this.
